A brief guide to London, England

London, as you would expect, has something for everyone. The tourist attractions are known throughout the world, from Buckingham Palace to the London Dungeon. The city offers a range of art museums and galleries dedicated to every subject you could think of, and more landmark buildings than you ever thought available; around every corner, you will find familiar architecture and street names reminiscent of childhood evenings playing Monopoly.

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”, said Samuel Johnson. Indeed, London is a city of contrasts. London is one of the major cities in the modern world and especially in the world of finance. But the modern lifestyle and architecture rubs shoulders with architecture from days long since gone.

This Guide to London would not be complete without mention of the theatre, restaurants and sports available in London.

London also has plenty to offer in the way of: five star restaurants; theatre in the noteworthy West End; shopping at Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Knightsbridge, the Portobello Road and of course Oxford Street with its famous Christmas lights. And sports fans are catered to with; the incredible Emirates Stadium, home to the Arsenal; and a few other premier football clubs like West Ham and Chelsea; cricket at the Oval and Lords cricket grounds; horse riding in Hyde Park; and Tennis at Wimbledon.

London is built around the River Thames, which, in recent times, has become a focal point of industry and trade in London. The river has always been used, famously, for freight transport, but, since it was cleaned up, it is also used to provide water-borne public transport, and following the refurbishment of its embankments, walkways and cyclepaths allow Londoners to enjoy riverside commuting or leisure pursuits.

London is a great place for walking; in fact, walking is a great way to learn about the layout of the city. There are a range of lovely parks and public gardens throughout London, most famously Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, which are joined by the Serpentine and create the largest green space in the centre of London.
